NIR Moisture Gauge, Meter, Sensor or Transmitter? The language of On-Line Measurement discussed...

This page is intended to explain the language of on-line measurement - at least as it is used by NDC. As you surf the web, you will find devices which use technologies such as NIR, X-ray, Microwave, NMR and others to make an in-process measurement of moisture and other constituents in products such as food, paper, chemicals and minerals, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, on a conveyor, in a dryer or silo, or flowing in a duct or pipe. To complicate matters, the name used by the various manufacturers to describe these instruments may be:

  • Moisture Gauge
  • Moisture Meter
  • Moisture Transmitter
  • Moisture Analyzer
  • Moisture Sensor

or one of many others.

To clarify our position, we see the Sensor as the part of the instrument that physically makes the measurement containing the detectors and signal processing circuitry. This is connected to an Interface, such as an Operator Workstation or HMI (Human Machine Interface) and together, the sensor plus the interface, make the "Gauge".
